Uhm.

Hitler was NOT pro-life. He was pro-murder. In case you forgot the 11 million people he killed, including the disabled, the gay people, the Christians, and oh YEAH Jewish people. 

If you’re pro-life you don’t murder other human beings. 

He was anti-elective abortion, though, which is what we meant. “Anti-choice” is what we should have used. He did support abortion for eugenics purposes, though.

Pro-Life isn’t just about abortion, though.
That’s what people so often forget. It’s against all types of killing. It means they obey the Consistent Ethic of Life. No abortion, no death penalty, no euthanasia, no homicide (well, actually, they consider all of the above homicide).
I can’t even call myself pro-life. 

The bolded posts above show why it’s really important to understand what certain labels mean.

If you’re going to use a political term to describe your stance on something, you need to make sure you understand what it means and if your views actually align with it.

Because identifying as pro-life does NOT mean that you are against the death penalty. In fact the majority of ”pro-life” politicians are against the right to choose but support the death penalty.

Being pro-life simply means you do not support the option of abortion in any and all cases (and by extension you do not support euthanasia, otherwise known as physician assisted suicide). It has nothing to do with the death penalty.

While we’re talking about what it means to be pro-life (which is a political stance) we should also look at the kind of legislation that is backed by pro-life groups:

  • Abstinence-only sex education bills
  • Bills that would outlaw hormonal contraceptives
  • Bills that put restrictions on hormonal contraceptives
  • Bills that put unnecessary restrictions on abortion services and clinic that offer such services
  • Bills that require doctors or clinics to meet unnecessary guidelines or hold unnecessary credentials in order to perform abortions

If being pro-life were only about abortion rights, the first three bullet points on that list wouldn’t be a main goal of pro-lifers and yet they are.

Now, let’s go back to Hitler.

Hitler killed millions of people. I’m well aware of that. He did so on the basis of race, sexuality, and disabilities. People who were not straight and cisgender, Aryan, and able-bodied were not considered people to Hitler and his policies. The only people Hitler saw value in were those who could make up his master race and this was reflected in his eugenics policies.

Aryan women were not allowed to get abortions because their offspring were supposed to make up Hitler’s master race. In fact, Hitler was SO pro-life that the punishment for Aryan women who sought abortions was the death penalty. That is, Aryan women who sought abortions of viable fetuses. Abortion was practically forced on those who carried fetuses with disabilities. Not only that, but birth control was all but prohibited in Nazi Germany.

And the only sex education offered in Nazi Germany was focused on which partner to choose based on how good their genes were. It was definitely NOT a comprehensive education about sex and safely having it since birth control was practically banned and abortion actually WAS banned.

So what does Hitler have in common with pro-lifers?

Well, he:

  • Banned abortion
  • Practically banned birth control
  • Prohibited sex education to be about anything other than breeding with the correct people

That sounds eerily similar to the legislation pro-lifers have been trying to pass (and successfully passing in some instances) ever since Roe v. Wade was decided.

And it’s also important to note that banning abortion does not affect the rate of abortion, the only thing that changes is how many pregnant people end up dying (along with their fetuses) from back-alley coat hanger abortions.

So, no. Saying you are pro-life is anything but actually supporting the sanctity of life whether it be the life of a cow, a pregnant person, a serial killer, or a terminally ill person who wants kill themselves with dignity. It does not encompass ideology about the death penalty, homicide, or even veganism. Being pro-life is primarily concerned with abortions rights and has a minor focus on physician assisted suicide.

So it’s not a misnomer to say that Hitler was pro-life in that he shared (and actually enacted) the views of pro-lifers. Hitler was against abortion for anyone he considered to be a human being (ie: Aryans) and everyone else got a one-way ticket to Auschwitz.

So since being pro-life is not actually supporting any kind of life and is actually trying to pass laws that would kill MORE people and INCREASE the rate of abortions, we call them anti-choice. Which is what they are. They are against the choice of abortion being available. They are against a terminally ill person choosing to die with dignity. And, finally, as the legislation they support shows, they are against people being informed about sex and being able to choose an appropriate birth control specifically for them and their partner(s).

And, finally, people claim to be so “pro-life” that they blow up abortion clinics and murder abortion doctors. That sounds SUPER pro-life to me. Actually, no, it doesn’t. Which is why we should NOT call them pro-life.
