Notice that when Aang learns how to take someone’s bending away, the lion turtle indicates you must place your hands on their forehead and their heart. Amon only places his hand on their forehead, which interestingly is where the Light chakra is. The Light chakra is blocked by illusion, and what illusion is better than the illusion that he can take your bending away?
(this idea was introduced to me by a friend on a Zelda forum, not me, so I can’t take any credit for this.)
I had been thinking something like this was going on, just from the fact that Amon clearly isn’t using the same technique Aang did (less fireworks, not nearly as difficult).
